The thing about ballerina shoes

These returned into fashion a few months ago. Ever since I first saw them adorning the feet of some early adopters of trends in my office, I felt instantly in love with them. My eyes hungrily searched for them at shop windows just to catch a glimpse of the beauties. They used to be only available at a few stores on linking road, Bandra. Today, they are more commonly available

Whoever looked at a ballerina’s (dancer's) feet and thought of designing mainstream shoes along the same lines must have been in love with womankind. Ballerina shoes to me, celebrates womanly beauty. A woman has to just slip into these shoes to instantly feel like a princess. They simply fill me with glee.

The best part is that these shoes are so comfortable; it’s like walking on a bed of cotton. Usually anything that makes a woman look or feel beautiful is also uncomfortable or clumsy or inconvenient. But ballerina shoes are simply a class apart. An applaudable creation!

So impressed I am with them that it drew me away from the streets, (my otherwise favorite place to shop for footwear) to the swanky showrooms where they are available. Sure, they have started selling fake counterparts on the streets but that’s like comparing bread to pastries.

I have a feeling i am going to be seen in them, even long after they will have gone out of fashion.

reminds me of the beautiful song from 60's band Left Banke. it goes like this...

I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance
and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah
Was I surprised,
no not at all

on another note, perhaps its the Cinderella story, which makes every woman feel like a princess when they put their feet in a ballerina

i love that song!

hmmm...cinderella story did not use a ballerina shoe...it used a glass shoe...

but perhaps the sentiment comes from there... not sure...

i do wear ballerinas very happily because it's great to have flats in fashion for a change..usually i'm terribly unfashionable in that way..
personally though, for me princess shoes are more like strappy high heels with pointy toes..:).. i completely agree though that nothing is more comfortable to lounge around in than ballerinas.. so they're everyday wear instead of the ghastly floaters we all used to wear once upon a time.. :)..
so for looking fashionable in comfort - ballerinas get my double thumbs up... for princess-appeal, only heels can do the job.. :)

Absolutely right Anjali! The only option we had for comfortable footwear were those 'ghastly floaters'!

Yes, interesting perspective on princes shoes...

Awh! Ballerinas and me! That's a love story which started with dance where, after classes, I didn't want to take my ballerinas off because they were so cute and comfortable.

Then I became a woman and even in Europe, I am a tall woman so hills are a nightmare to fit in with the crowd. So I was wearing ballerinas, but not very comfortable ones (it wasn't the fashion so only shoe warehouses were selling them).

And one day, Repetto, a dance shop, decided to create shoes from their dance shoes models.... that was my little girl's dream come true!

Take a look at the website
http://www.repetto.com/prodlist.php?CAT_ID=1&SUB_CAT_ID=34

I bought the Bolchoi ones and I love them so much that when I wear them it takes me hours to go somewhere as I am extremely careful where I walk. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned. It happened to me regularly to panic in the street, thinking I forgot to put my shoes on and still was wearing my slippers.

Since I moved to India (5 months ago) I cannot wear them outside, it would ruin them. So they became my office shoes. I keep them in their pretty red box in my draw, wear them every morning and put them preciously back every evening.

Am I sad? Maybe! Do I care? NOPE!

hmm........I donno pretty much baout a girl's shoe..but I remember words of Anna Pavlova..

"As is the case in all branches of art, success depends in a very large measure upon individual initiative and exertion, and cannot be achieved except by dint of hard work."

even shoe making, wearing shoes and walking is an art :)

what you've written is completly true.I totally agree with the fact that these shoes are like a bed of cotton and at the same time they make you feel like a princess. And to some people comfort matters more tahn style..and its just a matter of coincedence that these shoes are fashionalbe..!

Pooj, you're wonderful! I completely agree with you about how much more beautiful a fashionable item becomes when it's also comfortable! The irony is while we're enjoying these cushions for our soles (or souls), the real ballerinas are bandaging their blisters and slamming doors on their pointe shoes to break them in!

The bread to 'pastries' analogy doesn't work because of the basic ingredients both share. Comparisons between chalk and cheese work better in this context. Also, 'pastry' is more grammatically correct. Just FYI.
Pooja Nair said…
Thank you for those corrections watchdog!

I still prefer the cake-pastry analogy as both are essentially meant to be eaten - one serves as a meal, the other as an indulgence

Shoe-ballerina, similarly, are both meant to be footwear. One for protecting your feet from the elements, the other for luxurious comfort.

However i take your point about "pastry". Thank you for that.

Not a copywriter you say?
