Due respect to the trash can

I don't know how many of us follow these but i just want to provide a few tips to minimise wastage and maximise apt disposal of waste.

As thinking, aware people, I'm sure we care about both.

But, how many of us do our part? I for one, discovered the "print on both sides" option just a year ago thanks to a responsible colleague. Often, we take many copies of a document just to aid a discussion during meetings. post the meeting the hard copies become redundant as everyone is emailed soft copies of the same. All that paper gets junked while they mostly have a blank side, which could be put to use. There is only so much a trash can can take.

When it comes to waste disposal, again, how many of us really care? How many of us really think about whether the junk is bio-degradable or not? How many of us use separate dustbins at home for wet and dry garbage? Maintaining separate dustbins for the two is vital for effective waste managment.

Do you guys think about these things? If you have some tips to share... I'd be glad to know them.

I agree pooja at home also v end up getting so much of trash as hand bills in news papers. its too much. v usually use these papers to pack things in or rite on the reverse lists of things to buy or phone numbers etc. imagine the amt of forests which get less by the day to give us these papers.

thank god for blogs so that v can tell each other what ought to b done and tell others about the same.

Nice very nice.

Where we live, we have something called curbside re-cycling. For a nominal yearly cost, a private company will provide us two bins, one for paper/plastic and the other one for bottles and cans. They pick them up from our homes once a week. All superstores and malls also have large recycle containers where people can deposit recyclables, esp. card board, styrofoam, alluminum foil, paper and plastic bags. It is a bit of work to separate your recyclables, but it is a small price to pay for a 'greener' future.

Waste management is a major thought process on its own and is something that a lot of industries think very seriousy about.
As for micro management at homes and offices we often have a lot of draft reports and letters that we usually throw away till the final one is approved. we have now started conserving those drafts and take out other drafts on the back of those that were rejected earlier. It definately helps saving a lot of paper.
Now even if u do manage to seperate out the garbage into dry/wet or recycable/non recycable wastes what needs to be seen is weather the disposal system is simiarly structured. I mean no point of us seperating out our wastes with noble ideas of a 'greener world' if the municipality fellow comes and dumps everything on the back of the same truck. Although im not qualified to comment on the disposal techniques of the BMC im just hoping they read this blog too.

i like this attitude. here at work, i am very particular about prints - we claim to live in a digital age, yet depend on prints - to me, its a mindset. i rant about it so much my colleagues thinnk i'm obsessed coz everytime anyone wants to print anything i asked them to rethink it a hundred times. and yes, we also have the system of using pages both sides.

another thing that troubles me is plastic varry bags. 'polythene dena bhaiyya...' is such a commonly irritating thing to hear in the kirana shop round the corner. even if people buy, say a small bag of chips, they want a bag to carry it. and we go to 3 different shops, we take 3 bags - one from each. i try to carry my little cloth bag everytime i go out - and am particular to mention to the shopkeeper that i DON'T want plastic bags. i also give anybody and everybody a free piece of my mind when i see them demanding plastic bags :)
